Three Road Accidents

SEPTEMBER 6, 2007 --

The last weekend of August, LPR, driving to New England and back to The Bronx, photographed two vehicular accidents. One week later, LPR photographed the aftermath of an auto accident in the east Bronx. No vehicle appears in the photos of the last accident, but those images are, perhaps, far grimmer.

The photo of the I-84 accident, in Connecticut east of Danbury, indicates that a truck jackknifed and a car then hit the cab of the truck. An ambulance was at the scene. LPR has no further information.

The second accident happened on the Saw Mill River Parkway, near Katonah and Bedford Hills, the evening of August 27, when a northbound car apparently was driven into a tree (shown felled in one of the accompanying photos). LPR was told by a person on the scene that the driver had already been taken away and did not seem to be seriously injured.

Helicopter waiting on Saw Mill RIver Parkway

When LPR arrived at this location, a helicopter was waiting on the Saw Mill's southbound roadway for firefighters to extricate the sole passenger, trapped in the car, and med-evac the individual to a nearby hospital.

Shortly after taking the photo of the firefighter leaning against a guard rail, LPR saw that he was on the ground, an oxygen mask covering his face.

Exhausted at the accident site …

LPR heard radio reports of the third accident, which happened on East Tremont Avenue near the Bronx River Parkway, early on September 1.

Four lives were said to be been lost in this accident -- three men and one woman. LPR happened to be in the area at 9 a.m. and got these images of the accident's aftermath just as a sanitation truck drove up to clear away the debris. An officer on the scene told LPR that the accident was called in at 4:04 a.m.

A shoe remains …

Addendum:

Sunday, LPR spotted people standing at the crash site with bouquets of flowers. Monday morning, LPR saw that a memorial tribute, including a Con Ed hardhat, had been placed at the site.

Two of the four killed, driver Maymont Baba, Jr. and Louis Matias, Jr., were Con Ed workers. Returning that evening, LPR saw that Con Ed cones had been placed as if to stand vigil: LPR also noticed, that evening the words "RIP Lou & Baba" painted on the East Tremont edge of the site.
