American Politics, Populism
and the Cloak of Invisibility

JANUARY 19, 2008 --

If anyone wonders what has happened to Harry Potter's cloak of invisibility, LPR thinks it has been placed over the two thirds of Americans, reported in the Demos/Brandeis IASP study, to be in danger of falling out of the middle class.

How invisible to politicians and media are those of us at the edge of the financial abyss?  The accepted "populist" is Lou Dobbs, of CNN who, per a December 4, 2006 New Yorker profile by Ken Auletta, is definitely part of the Upscale Class.

A populist does not have to be a person teetering on the edge of financial collapse -- a populist need only take his stand with the people.

Yet, at least from the Auletta article, it is not clear if Lou Dobbs is aware of the daily squeeze administered to people by predatory free enterprise.

A true populist can see through the cloak of invisibility intended to keep the struggling class out of sight.  LPR fears that some presidential candidates would replace predatory free enterprise with predatory government.

LPR continues to hope that  a presidential candidate will step forward  who will discover the wisdom of Federalist 57 as guide to our political and economic renewal.
