"Brief but Complete"

July 7, 2009 --

John Merriman was head writer and later editor on the "CBS Evening News" when Walter Cronkite was managing editor / anchor. His advice to the program's writers was: "be brief but complete."

LPR will try to follow that guidance in this posting. The following images with comment are posted in no particular order, unless one would prefer a mystical explanation of events.

Red Ford

Washington Post Publisher Katharine Weymouth, granddaughter of WP's Katharine Graham, got into some media quicksand, this month, when Politico reported that she planned some fundraisers -- for the paper. She would provide the dinner guests (including administration officials) and "sponsors" would "pay to play" -- "off-the record" (a/k/a/ - secret). When word got out, Ms. Weymouth cancelled the dinners. LPR's idea, prompted by this recent display of a Ford 2010 Mustang, at Yankee Stadium II: get "sponsors" to pay when their products appear in the paper's news and sports photos.

One other idea for WP -- before adopting a money-based thought, consider if Richard M. Nixon would exclaim: "See? What I've said all along. They're nothing but a bunch of hypocrites."

The gas squeeze

Yup, there they go again -- and finally the media is beginning to realize higher gas prices do not help our economy. LPR heard Rush Limbaugh say this recently.

The record will show that LPR has been saying this for years. P.S. - prices in NYC are higher than shown.

Morningside book store

This independent book shop, opposite, and leased from, Columbia University is now closed, not by choice of the proprietor. LPR will monitor the University's replacement.

Tanglewood lawn

The 2009 Tanglewood season, in Lenox, MA opened July 3, and continues through August 23, Boston Symphony Orchestra concerts are performed Friday and Saturday evenings, Sunday afternoons, with open rehearsals of the Sunday program Saturday mornings.

LPR thinks Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral) is what music on a summer's night, on the Tanglewood lawn, is all about. (Sorry, no Sixth this season.) For the Tanglewood 2009 schedule, just google "Tanglewood."

Evija Mehra

Evija Mehra is a personal makeup coach, demonstrating her technique at Room Service, last month. She is also Ms. Latvia, 1999.

YSII picture taking

People are taking a lot of pictures of the outside of YSII. Please note from the image shown here that this means the picture taker has his or her back to The Stadium.

LPR, July 6, suggested to one woman, having a friend or relative take her picture in front of Gate 4, that she might also want to have a photo of The Stadium, now looking truly funereal. Indicating zero interest, she told LPR that she never went there.

Descartes revised: If I am there, it exists. Seems to LPR a "who needs landmarks?" mindset. Quoting my dad: "no good can come of this."

YSII

Even the new ballpark says, in online shorthand:

"Y"

Registration Sticker

Mayor Bloomberg, June 14, post-game

The image of the registration sticker is the subject of this LPR poll -- please answer the question.

On July 5, LPR perplexedly found a traffic summons on his windshield. The LPRmobile was not at a meter. It was not parked on the wrong side of the street. It was not in a no parking zone.

Exceedingly puzzled, LPR looked at the summons. This is the offense: written in hand-computer print: "Sticker on Dash," followed by "FINE AMOUNT $65.00."

If I am guilty of an offense, I think it should be: Sticker curling at edges. LPR agrees that it is not easy for the mayor (seen leaving YSII last month) to deal with all the city's problems.

Where is the money to come from? Streets still are not in good condition, as indicated by the two images of a car trap on Seaman Avenue in upper Manhattan, spotted shortly after LPR read the summons. Indeed let there be summonses for curled registration stickers, for double-parking at red lights, for unwashed cars, for listening in the car to conservative talk radio, for driving into Manhattan dressed improperly. Replace NYC's Office of Public Advocate with a Fine Development Agency.

Joe and Mika

MSNBC and WABC duo Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinksi stopped at the Barnes & Noble Union Square store, last month, promoting the book by the former congressman. LPR was surprised to see several hundred people at the event, which concluded with book signing.

LPR got an image of Mika signing the book while Joe chatted with a purchaser. Was she Joe's designated autograph writer? btw--it is not oversight that the title of the Scarborough book is not mentioned here. LPR is still waiting for the duo to answer my emails. Silence for silence.

Setting sun, July 4

LPR was unsuccessful in photographing the Manhattan July Fourth fireworks from the roof of his apartment building in the Bronx, about 9 miles up the Hudson river.

Fortunately, LPR earlier in the Independence evening got some images of God's fireworks on the New Jersey side the Hudson.
