AUGUST
14, 2004 -
With the
Show championship, September 2, delegates to the Republican
National Convention can catch the last act of the
Broadway Show League 2004 season before going to Madison Square Garden for
the last evening of the GOP quadrennial gathering.
The game is scheduled the Heckscher softball fields in Central Park, between
the west drive and the Central Park Carousel.
Aida eliminated De La Guarda,
August
12, and 42nd Street defeated Lion King in 13 innings, that day.
Lion King is still alive, however, in this
double elimination tournament, beating Hairspray after its 42nd Street loss.
But with that loss, the season ended for Hairspray, whose team and fans brought
terrific spirit to their games -- not that great spirit wasn't brought by the
other teams in the show divisions: De La Guarda, Lion King, Fiddler on the
Roof, 42nd Street, Avenue Q, Boy from Oz, The Producers, Embedded/Labyrinth,
MCM,
Playwrights Horizons, Aida, Beauty and the Beast, Phantom/Sly Fox, Little Shop
of Horrors /MTC at the Biltmore, Blue Man Group, Rent, Wicked, Atlantic Theater
Company, Gypsy, Wonderful Town, I Am My Own Wife.
LPR here recommends a league award to that show which, in totality -- players
AND nonplayers -- made the most positive impression, in terms of good sportsmanship
camaraderie for the entire season. The Best All-Around Team Award, it might
be called.
The Broadway Cares Championship -- Boy from Oz against I Am My Own Wife will
be played on August 19.
The organizational championship will be played on August 26, with undefeated
Nederlander the current favorite.
