Miles from the Mainstream
D. R. ZUKERMAN, proprietor
The Remains of Camp Wahanda

JANUARY 2, 2005 --

Stone chimney and fireplace -- all that is left of the rec hall of Camp Wahanda, sister camp to Camp Wabigoon. The camps, closed in the early 1970's, were located on Smith Hill, above Winsted.

The rec hall stage was the site of the 'big show -- a Broadway musical performed by Wahanda and Wabigoon seniors, in mid-August. In 1955, the big show was "The
King and I."

Winsted's Main Street was ravaged by a
flood, five days later, taking seven lives in a town of 8,000. A restaurant owned by Ralph Nader's father -- the Highland Arms -- was one of the properties suffering damage on Main Street.
