The Federalist Paper No. 57
Campaign Pledge

June 15, 2014 --

The campaign between two professors at Randolph-Macon College -- Democrat Jack Trammell and Republican David Brat -- for the House seat from Virginia's Seventh Congressional District prompted LPR to draft the following pledge, including language from Federalist No. 57. LPR invites all candidates to the House of Representatives to take this pledge. (Federalist No. 57 is one of the seven papers in The Federalist series that discusses the House in the constitutional framework).

1. Campaign contributions are to be accepted only from individuals of voting age.

2. Campaign contributions are to be limited to one contribution from any one individual

3. Campaign contributions will have a $250 ceiling.

4. I will not resort to negative campaigning. I will discourage the media from engaging in personal attacks on my opponent.

5. If elected, I will maintain with the people of my congressional district "that communion of interests and sympathy of sentiments...without which every government degenerates into tyranny."

6. If elected, I will not create a "war chest" for a re-election campaign.
