Guys,
I listened with great interest to your comment, chatting on air with Don Imus,
last week, that Democrats need to start standing up for themselves if they
are to stand up for the country. You see, I have
been saying precisely that for several years -- with just one variation: I
have directed this comment to Republicans.
Democrats clearly have no difficulty standing up for themselves. Their difficulty,
it seems to me, is that they tend to go no further. Do you remember the problem
with the House bank, in the early 1990's?
Perhaps Democrats end up disappointing their friends.
Republicans, of course, have difficulty recognizing who their friends are.
Still, the discomfiture Republicans show in governing is, I think, preferable
to a free people, to the zest Democrats have for
political rule -- and the subpoena power.
Is there a Republican in Congress who will not face impeachment if Democrats,
by means of accusatory politics, take
Congress by a large majority?
When I hear you call on Democrats to stand up for themselves, I hear you rewriting
the song "Accentuate the Positive" to " Accentuate the Negative."

In those days, the media
did not emphasize our battlefield casualties, and there seemed to have
been a consensus that our enemies were bad guys. But, then, in those days,
the enemy was seen as the guy shooting at us -- not our commander-in-chief.
Well, to show no hard feelings, here is the song lyric more suited to your political
style:
"You've got to accentuate the negative, eliminate the positive, latch on
to the accusative, don't mess with rationality."
Just one thing -- in the 1960 presidential campaign, John F. Kennedy charged
that we had a "missile gap" with the Soviet
Union. It turned out that this was not true. Would you say that this was a lie
-- or that Candidate Kennedy was merely mistaken, or misinformed?
