The Passing of Christo

May 19, 2020 --

The international artist Christo passed away on May 31, age 85.  Christo and his wife, Jeanne-Claude, who died in 2009, were known for their monumental artworks that included wrapping buildings and decorating islands.  In New York, 2005, they erected thousands of saffron-colored "Gates" on the paths of Central Park. Christo also painted scenes of how "The Gates" would look, standing on the Central Park paths. LPR spent many days that February and March, 2005, photographing their artwork, and LPR webmaster Terri Fassio posted a number of images on this site. To see these images, go to the LPR Archives and click LPR Special Edition, "The Gates," February 13; Gates Week One, February 20; New York Triumph: The Gates, February 27; and Gone is The Gates, March 13.  Christo was working on a project, wrapping the Arc de Triomphe in slivery blue fabric and red rope, when he died. This project is scheduled to be exhibited in Paris, September-October, 2021.  R.I.P. Christo.
