Congratulations, too ...

February 5, 2020 --

...to Sofia Anna "Sonia" Kenin, the until now unheralded 21-year old American who won the women's Australian Open, defeating Spain's Garbine Muguruza 4-6, 6-2, 6-2,  Ms.Kenin is the second youngest women's Australian champion.

(Maria Sharapova is the youngest, winning the Australian title in 2008 as a twenty-year old.)

This is Sofia's  first Grand Slam title.  Her victories in the tournament  included a win over the top-ranked women's tennis player, Ashleigh Barty, and Sofia now goes from 15 to 7 in women's world tennis rankings.  Her father is her tennis coach.

Sofia's parents emigrated to the United States from the former Soviet Union in 1987, and  returned to Moscow for Sonia's  birth so that the grandparents could help with the baby.

They returned to the United States when Sofia was still a baby. (LPR wonders if the family has a Jewish background.)

...and to Serbiaa's Novak Djokovic, winner of the  Australian men's open title, defeating Austria's  Dominic Thiem, 6-4, 4-6, 2-6,6-3,6-4, for his 17th Grand Slam victory, three short of Roger Federer's record 20 major tennis titles.  Rafael Nadal is second with 18 Grand Slams.  The Australian title returns Djokovic to the top of the men's world tennis rankings.
