OCTOBER
3, 2004 --
Proponents
of the plan to bring the 2012 Summer Olympics to New York City
in 2012 held a demonstration across from Madison Square Garden
on September 29.
LPR got to the demonstration late and was blocked by traffic from stopping
to listen, but did, while stuck in Eighth Avenue traffic, photograph a sign
supporting construction of facilities for the 2012 games.
LPR tried to leave Eighth Avenue at 25th Street but found the egress blocked
by a police barricade -- set up for no visible reason, and one that did not
ease traffic
flow.
Below 31st street, LPR saw no police presence for purpose of easing traffic
flow while the demonstration, which did not
draw massive backing, continued.
LPR has come to the reluctant conclusion that City Hall has taken, generally
a laissez faire approach, to NYC traffic
congestion, preferring that police serve summonses for revenue-raising purpose,
than to be friends of motorists.
By the way -- here is a question for the domestic discussion of the presidential
candidates: what do you expect the price of gas to be on your Inauguration
Day?
LPR uses the term "domestic discussion" because these joint appearances
are not quite debates, but occasions to answer questions by a favored media
news personality.
Can't candidates debate issues without the need of prompting from news personalities?
And a question for proponents of a New York City Olympics: will cars be allowed
in Manhattan by the time of the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics?
LPR shudders that the only vehicles to be permitted in Manhattan, by 2012 --
perhaps long before -- will be the mammoth buses, taxis and limousines.
