July 5, 2021 --
Given their slim majority in the House and the 50-50 split in the Senate, a vote to end the filibuster now would show that the Democrats do not have wide public support for their push to, in Mitch McConnell's term, "rig" the system in their favor.
The Democrats should wait until the November 2022 elections, using the filibuster as a campaign issue, and see if they significantly increase their majorities in Congress. |
That is to say, let the people speak on whether the filibuster should be ended. Should the Democrats not increase their congressional numbers -- a fortiori, if the GOP gains majorities in House and Senate, the Democrats will be forced to face political reality: the people want the filibuster to remain as protection that consensus on vital matters of the public interest must be achieved. |
