D. R. ZUKERMAN, proprietor
G.O.P. Convention Hotels Concluded

APRIL 13, 2004 --

W New York (from what LPR has learned the "W" stands for anything one chooses -- herewith a nomination for Winsted) on Lexington Avenue, between 50th and 49th streets, will be home to delegates from Arkansas and Maine. Marriott East Side, across 49th Street on Lexington will house the Colorado and Minnesota delegations.

Marquis Marriott, on Broadway between 45 and 46th streets, rises above the Marquis Theater, presently showing "Thoroughly Modern Millie." Home to California, Ohio and Tennessee, who should note that the lobby is on the eighth floor.

Millennium Broadway, north side of 44th Street, between Seventh and Sixth Avenues, is the building with the flags and is across from the "Good Morning America" studio which draws street spectators as shown in the accompanying photo. The Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin delegations looking for this hotel might just look up, from Broadway/Seventh Avenue, to see the sign shown in the second Millennium photo accompanying this article (and then head east for those three flags).

The American Samoa and Indiana delegates are staying at the Embassy Suites, way downtown, diagonally across Ground Zero, on Vesey Street. The twin towers of light that symbolized the World Trade towers for a time, after 9/11, lifted into the sky in the space in front of this side of the hotel.

The Ritz Carlton is several blocks south of Embassy Suites and, at the southern tip of Manhattan, is an appropriate hotel for the Georgia delegates.

The convention venue, Madison Square Garden, is located between Seventh and Eighth Avenues and between 31st and 33rd Streets. The accompanying photo shows the Seventh Avenue entrance. Delegates must walk through the office building to the Garden, which, as the second photo shows, is round -- not square-- and is at the corner bounded by 31st Street and Eighth Avenue. It will not necessarily be helpful to the image of the G.O.P. if the Garden, during the convention, is surrounded by a phalanx of steel-helmeted, heavily-armed officers of the New York City Police Department -- even if two such outfitted officers were seen in front of St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Easter Sunday.

Those aren’t Easter bonnets! Steel helmeted cops in front of St. Patrick's on Easter Sunday.
