Grant's 184th

MAY 1, 2006 --

LPR learned at the annual commemoration of the birthday of General Grant that Colorado, August 1, marks the 130th anniversary of its statehood.

Dianne Linnen read a proclamation from Colorado Gov. Bill Owens noting that Colorado became a state during the
presidency of Gen. Grant, and declaring April 27, 2006 to be Ulysses S. Grant Day in Colorado.

The speakers at the Grant's Tomb ceremony, in Manhattan, included Ulysses G. Dietz, great-great-grandson of the general, representing the Grant family.

Mr. Dietz, curator of the Newark Museum, spoke about Grant as devoted husband, father and grandfather. And noting that it
rained last year, when he did not attend the commemoration, he said he will not miss future ceremonies.

The audience included schoolchildren from Mt. Vernon, N.Y., Manhattan and The Bronx.

In his remarks, Brig. Gen. Finnegan indicated that the graduating class at West Point will be joining "an army at war" and is "ready to answer the nation's
call."

Gen. Finnegan remarked that Gen. Grant, member of West Point's Class of 1843, demanded excellence and dedication to duty of himself and expected this of
others. And he advised the schoolchildren to "commit yourself to excellence."

be a shameless attempt to get lots of visits from the cadets at United States Military Academy.

And may God protect them -- and all members our armed forces -- in their service to our country.
