The New York Times Supports Greta Thunberg

October 5, 2019 --

The New York Times, in a long editorial, September 27, supported 16-year old climate change activist Greta Thunberg against her conservative critics. The Times noted that Ms Thunberg "[s]uffers no fools in her unsparing and blunt statements to diplomats and members of Congress alike." It went on to say: "[s]he does not allow her message--that the youth of the world have been betrayed by past generations' inaction on climate change--to be co-opted by fawning lawmakers...."

LPR agrees that personal criticism of Ms. Thunberg is uncalled for, but allows there is room for disagreement with her assertion at the UN Climate Change Action Summit, September 23, "We are in the beginning of a mass extinction...."

The Washington Post, in a September 24 story by Hannah Natanson, compared the denunciations (from the right) directed at Ms. Thunberg to the attacks (from the left - Bill Maher was particularly vicious) on the then- 16-year old Nicholas Sandmann, last January.

But all young Sandmann was doing was standing still near the Lincoln Memorial, wearing a MAGA cap.

(The Sandmann lawsuit for defamation against The Washington Post was dismissed in July. Margot Cleveland, writing in The Federalist, suggests that Sandmann would win on appeal. LPR is not confident, however, that Sandmann would prevail at trial, should one occur.)
