JUNE
5, 2006 --
Alan Hevesi would have a household name, by now, if he were a Republican.
But as he is a Democrat he is likely to remain the obscure state comptroller
of New York that he is, after being the obscure comptroller of New York City
that he was.
Speaking last week at the Queens College commencement, Comptroller Hevesi suggested
that perhaps U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-NY)
might put a bullet in the president's head. (The audience reaction is not clear
-- one report suggesting there was no reaction, another report saying that people
gasped. A tape of the Hevesi statement has applause following his remarks.)
Mr. Hevesi thereafter apologized, acknowledging that it was a dumb
comment -- and that seems to be the end of it.

LPR believes
-- if the comptroller were a Republican, the media would drum
up a clamor demanding his removal from office (provided the president
was a Democrat,
of course), and a secret service investigation.
As it happens, Hevesi is another of this writer's Dayton Seaside lessons. He
was city comptroller then and because Dayton Seaside was the subject of curious
treatment of property taxes that would go to the city, I wrote to Hevesi urging
that he look into the matter.
But I have already noted that John Faso was the only official in New York to
give me a fair hearing. From Hevesi's office, I got heave-ho letters. We have
not heard claims that the Republicans somehow
used technology to get Hevesi to make the commencement address blunder -- at
least not yet.
