The Ilhan Omar Controversy

March 19, 2019 --

LPR has some difficulty with Speaker Pelosi's explanation that Rep. Ilhan Omar did not understand that the "full weight" of her statements about Israel's supporters pointed to anti-Semitism. One comment at issue was "But it's all about the Benjamins, baby." Clearly, the "full weight" of the statement referred to the Benjamin Franklin on the one-hundred dollar bill. This would credit Rep. Omar with knowledge of U.S. jargon -- and in a dual loyalty context.

( To deny her familiarity with the language would amount to...racism?)

One might say of Omar's comments about Israel and aspersions of the motivations of her U.S. supporters",But It's the anti-Semitism, baby." (The House, March 7, adopted a meaningless resolution that did not mention Rep. Omar, but condemned anti-Semitism and other forms of hate against specified groups, including Muslims. The New York Times, March 8, carried a front page story titled, "House Measure/Condemns Hate/In All its Forms.)
