A Challenge to an
Incumbent District Attorney

MAY 15, 2005 --

Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau faces a challenge in a Democratic primary from Leslie Crocker
Snyder, a former assistant district attorney and state supreme court justice.

Mr. Morgenthau, 85 years old has been Manhattan D.A,. for thirty years and
apparently not a few people, including the challenger, believe it is time for a change.

Judge Snyder announced her candidacy at a May 10 breakfast that drew some 800 people. (The breakfast program included a clip of a Mike Wallace interview of Judge Snyder. Mr. Wallace told Bob Schieffer, last week, that he had just marked his 87th birthday.)

The following evening, a smaller numberr of supporters attended the telecast at a lower Manhattan pub of a new Law and Officer episode in which Judge Snyder -- now in private practice -- plays a judge. LPR got a photo at the second event of the candidate and her husband, Dr. Fredric Snyder, a pediatrician.

Promising to revitalize the Manhattan district attorney office, in her remarks at the May 10 breakfast, Candidate Snyder indicaed tht she would bring a district attorney presence to various sections
of Manhattan, starting with Washington Heights -- which is the area in the borough that was the site of the Great Wall Tumbledown of May 12.
