LPR Advisory for G.O.P. Conventioneers

FEBRUARY 4, 2004 --

The February 2 edition of The New York Times ran a story showing the hotels where GOP delegations are staying for the national convention which is set to meet at Madison Square Garden, August 30 to September 2. (It is not clear that the story was intended, in part, to help protesters prepare for anti-Bush demonstrations.)

As it happens, the Californa, Tennessee and Ohio delegations are to stay at the Marquis Marriott, where most meetings of the state bar association were held, including the lunch that had Attorney General Eliot Spitzer as speaker.

Accordingly, LPR has some familiarity with this hotel. The Times was indeed
right in noting that the lobby is on the 8th floor. The Times did not mention, however, that certainly to a person in a rush, it can be maddening to chase after opening elevator doors. Where available, LPR recommends taking the Marquis Marriott escalators.

The hotel is the tall structure to the left in the accompanying photo. It is located on Broadway between 45th and 46th streets. The Times also mentions the Algonquin, which is on West 44th Street, but east of 6th Avenue. This building is opposite the City Car Association, and close to the Harvard Club.

LPR photographed the hotel on January 30, after the labor law meeting of the New York State Bar in the City Car building. (see two accommpanying photos of this hotel made famous by writers for The New Yorker, in the ’20s.)

The delegation from the District of Columbia will be at the Algonquin for the GOP convention. From time to time, LPR will post photos of the other hotels for the GOP gathering. (Wouldn't it be neat if, to confound the protesters, the GOP switched the hotel assignments?)

First In A Series

In upcoming issues of LPR, we will feature photos of the hotels housing delegates to the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City.
