JUNE 25, 2004 --

An article in The Washington Post, by Philip Kennicott, June 20, discussed the leftist doggerel of Calvin Trillin and the conservative doggerel of William H. von Dreele. The New York Sun reported, June 21, that U.S. Judge Guido Calabresi, of the Second Circuit, in public remarks, sharply criticized the decision of the United States Supreme Court in the 2000 Florida presidential voting case, and effectively called for the defeat of President Bush, this November. These articles prompted some doggerel from this writer, which here follow:

Doggernet

Calvin Trillin is usuall willin’
to consume conservatives as cold meal
Me, I prefer, and would quickly defer
to, the deft rhymes of William H. von Dreele

My own doggerel is worthless
I get nada for this “lieder”
Whether or not it's mirthless
Depends on who is the reader

And so no hundred bucks to me

I maintain the status of amateur
Writing my doggerel all for free
Same price charged by a paramour

It didn't take very long
To put these words on computer screen
Any of us can sing his own rhyme song
Any of us can say what we mean

Judicial Reasoning

Imagine if a sitting judge
Towards a Democratic president would sneer
I'm confident the media wouldn't fudge
But would put impeachment in gear

To call for Bush defeat is clearly hypocritical
Whatever the caveats from Judge Calabresi
Because his assault is transparently political
To think not, well that is just crazy

Where is the judicial temperament of yore
And concern to avoid the political thicket
Replaced by looking for Republicans to gore
Telling them where they can go stick it
