Miles from the Mainstream
D. R. ZUKERMAN, proprietor
LPR at the Movies

MAY 2, 2007 --

There are at least two possibilities when a movie-goer is puzzled by a film: either the film was intended to bewilder -- or the story did not unfold as well as it might have.

" Jindabyne" left LPR puzzled. The screen, after about two hours, suddenly becomes black and that is the end of the movie. Is that supposed to link up with all the black screens that appear throughout this film?

The director is not Bertolucci. The director is no Bertolucci. No discussion.

(That's an inside comment for those who
endured this long, disconnected treatment of a Raymond Carver short story.)

Moratorium on Film-Making Anyone?

A month ago, LPR caught a screening of "Midnight," a 1939 movie starring Claudette Colbert, Don Ameche, and John Barrymore.

They don't make films like this anymore: in black and white; witty; charming;without
deafening sound track; without hundreds of credits that scroll by too fast to read.

A Movie Idea

LPR (who qualifies for senior citizen
tix) Would Pay Full Price To See:

Anthony Hopkins playing a hard-bitten law enforcement officer tracking serial killer Tommy Lee Jones.
