The Third Annual LPR Coverage
of the Macy's
Thanksgiving Day Parade

NOVEMBER 30, 2006 --

All the photos in this edition of LPR are from the 80th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade -- and the November 21 rehearsal in Herald Square.

Robin Hall, executive producer of the parade, was quoted as predicting that this would be "a Parade to remember."

Indeed it was, if not for the reason Mr. Hall had in mind. The sun did not shine over
the 2006 parade, crowds were somewhat smaller than usual and, because of the rain, people left before Santa Claus arrived.

But, 9/11 did not stop the 75th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the inclement weather in New York City, this November 23, did not keep the bands, clowns, floats, celebrities and balloons, plus some 10,000 participants from marching down Central Park West at
77th Street, to Broadway at Columbus Circle and on to Herald Square at 34th Street.

LPR stopped by the parade rehearsal in front of Macy's, November 21, but, unlike two years ago, was unable photograph the Herald Square run-through. LPR had to settle for photos of people's backs -- and for pictures of a few groups, including the Air Force Academy band and some members of the large Camp Broadway contingent, waiting their turn to rehearse.

This year, LPR realized that the Macy's parade brings to spectators and television viewers a wide variety of performing artists.

If some in the crowd might not be familiar
with the name of opera singer Renee Fleming, others -- if only a few -- might not have known, till this parade, of Ashley Tisdale.

LPR was surprised, and delighted, to see Nadia Comaneci and Bart Conner among
the parades participants. The last time Nadia and Bart were photographed by the LPR camera was February 2005, when they joined the New York City campaign to persuade the International Olympics Committee to name New York the host of the 2012 Olympics.

LPR has reason to take issue with recent distortions in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The Washington Post of the term "populist," but will
save this discussion for another day.

This LPR is limited to images from the 80th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, a true populist event, an event whose
spirit will not be dampened by rain, an event that uplifts the hearts of young and old, without respect to race, religion, ethnicity, gender -- or weather.

(And special thanks to LPR webmaster Terri Fassio for setting all these photos out for LPR clicksters.)

Thanks to Aaron Sasson, NBC Universal field operations, for letting LPR take pictures from an NBC booth when the rain started. Without the cover of the booth, LPR would not have been able to photograph much of the parade.
