This ending could, of course, allow for a movie or return to cable with flashbacks showing Tony and Carmela based on old stuff or new appearances.

Michael Corleone succeeded Don Vito when the Don retired. Meadow's succession could be seen as assisted retirement -- retirement with a nudge.
