Miles from the Mainstream
D. R. ZUKERMAN, proprietor
Memo To NBC-TV President
Jeff Zucker

JANUARY 23, 2005 --

Read a report that you concede NBC might slip to fourth place in prime-time ratings for your "target audience."

Although kind of outside your target, am
submitting some thoughts on how to improve the NBC standings.

Note -- not suggesting that you air Law and Order/United Kingdom. We get that stuff on PBS, essentially.

Certainly not suggesting telecasts of old
musicals -- much less operas.

Defnitely not suggesting non-partisan investigative reports.

On the undersanding that your target is the 18 to 49 people:

Dormies and Townies -- reality show based on the experiences of college students interacting with non-college students.

The Reformers -- reality show based on the experiences of assistants to Ralph Nader interacting with working people.

Skiers and Execs -- reality show based on ski-bums interacting with vacationing execs, lawyers, doctors, columnists, politicians.

Whatever Happened To? -- reality experiences of the casts of the shows when NBC was doing better with the
18 to 49ers.

The Plutocrats -- reality experiences of fabulously wealthy people who go into politics.

And perhaps you might also adopt a slogan for NBC:

Where entertainment donaldtrumps enlightenment.

All right, if you must add another Law and Order program, how about:

Law and Order in the Old West?

The lawmen (obviously including Clint Eastwood) and the cowboys (obviously
including Hilary Swank).

And how about - Bush Bash -- weekly roundtable of NBC News correspondents, with Martin Sheen, moderator.

Wishing NBC well.
