A Midsummer Night's Journey
Into A Long Day

JULY 18, 2007 --

LPR was heading home, early Sunday (July 8) on Central Park West after observing the scene outside clubs on West 27th and 28th streets, spending some time in Grand, on East 58th, and then spending some time in the 24-hour Apple store on Fifth Avenue, between 59th and 58th streets.

The line starts here - on the corner of Central Park and 81st Street …

Once again, there were people spending the night on the park side of Central Park West, from 81st Street north. Six summers ago, the line had formed for tickets to "The Seagull."

This time, the line was for tickets to the last performance of "Romeo and Juliet" at the Delacorte Theater.

The accompanying photos show the line after it returned to the park at about 6 A.M. from Central Park West (Central Park is closed between 1 A.M. and 6 A.M.).

After the July 8 performance, at about 11.45 P.M., LPR noticed Lynn Redgrave, and then Vanessa Redgrave, at the corner where, about 21 hours earlier, LPR noticed people waiting along Central Park West to re-enter the park for tickets to "Romeo and Juliet," the play the Redgrave sisters had just seen.

LPR did not attend the performance, waiting outside the Delacorte, trying to hear snatches of dialogue over the PA system. LPR was surprised -- disappointed, actually -- to find young people serving as Delacorte security actively standing between the LPR camera and celebs gathering at the theater's entrance.

As it turned out, had the Delacorte people not been so antagonistic to First Amendment principles -- and on public ground -- LPR would not have caught these images of the sisters Redgrave.

LPR did manage to get some photos outside the Delalcorte stage door, including one of Jane Krakowski speaking with Camryn Manheim (who played Juliet's nurse).

Somewhat past this midsummer, the Delacorte will present "A Midsummer Night's Dream." To LPR's knowledge, no one dies in this play.

Whether the First Amendment will be in better shape outside the stage than it was late July 8, LPR will have to see. And LPR plants to post more photos of the "Romeo and Juliet" line taken when the tickets were distributed -- shortly after 1 p.m., and later that evening.

PS for NYC Parks Commish Benepe:

BY THE WAY: LPR also was denied First Amendment protection in Bryant Park, when a crowd gathered to watch the Yankees on a screen playing an away game in Toronto.

LPR wanted to get a photo of the crowd and was directed to the media area between the park and the cafe next to the public library. Here, a Yankees' security person chased me away, threatening use of force -- notwithstanding my NYPD press ID.

LPR is still covered by copyright?

LPR was told during the Romeo and Juliet intermission that Kevin Kline and Vanessa Redgrave were in the audience.

After the performance and skirmish with staff re: photo taking, I found myself standing next to Lynn Redgrave, and then Vanessa on the corner where, some 21 hours earlier, I noticed the start of ticket line for the last Romeo and Juliet, calling to mind the overnight lines along Central Park West for The Seagull, whose cast included Kevin Kline.
