NCAA Division III Cross Country

NOVEMBER 20, 2007 --

Most New Yorkers might not be aware that the cross country track in Van Cortlandt Park,  in The Bronx, is considered a mecca by runners throughout the country. November 10, NYU hosted the Division III Atlantic Region finals at this venerable course, with the top finishers going to the nationals at St. Olaf's in Minnesota, November 17.

Peter Kosgei, of Hamilton College, going for his medal as the Division III Atlantic Region winner of the men's cross country race.

Leader Liz Montgomery

Geneseo's Liz Montgomery was the top women's runner and Peter Kosgei, of Hamilton, was the men's winner. The two top women's teams were Geneseo and Plattsburgh -- tied for first, with Geneseo winning on a tie-breaker.  Host NYU won the Atlantic Region men's team title, with Cortland second.

After the races, LPR heard that one of the Cortland men, Jerry Greenlaw, lost one shoe early in the going and still finished 15th, running with one bare foot, a finish that likely made it possible for Corrtland to join NYU in the nationals.

Other Atlantic Region Division III teams going to the nationals are, on the women's side: Ithaca and Cortland and, for the men, The College of New Jersey and Geneseo.

Q. for Bronx Borough President Carrion: when will signs announcing The Bronx include "Home of Van Cortland Park: Mecca for cross country runners throughout the USA -- and the world"?

Q. for Mayor Bloomberg: when will NYC ease up on parking summonses for visitors coming to Van Cortland to see their children run this famous cross-country course?

And they're off …

LPR noticed two movie shower trucks on Broadway, at the western edge of the park -- yes the same Broadway continues into Manhattan to its tip.  Shown here is one of those trucks.  This part of Broadway also draws summons-issuing agents while cross-country races are being held.  No mas, no mas.
