The New York Times Fires its Political Columnists

April 5, 2016 --

New York Times Publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger terminated the paper’s political columns, effective immediately, the Times announced today. In a statement, Mr. Sulzberger said that the Trump presidential candidacy played a key role in his decision. Citing columns by David Brooks and Nicholas Kristof that acknowledged being out of touch with ordinary Americans, and thus unable to comprehend the Trump phenomenon, Mr. Sulzberger said that the paper will replace the columns with additional display ads “that represent the exquisite tastes of New York Times readers.” According to sources, the columnists are considering offers from Sen. Bernie Sanders to join his campaign staff, and from Hillary Clinton to work for the Clinton Foundation.
