LPR was interested to read, in a New York Times article, May 18, on transgender A. J. Jackson, a high school student in Chester, Vt. the following: “When he had his period he wondered if he should revert to the girls’ bathroom, because there was no place to throw away his used tampons [in the boys’ bathroom]. After reading the article, LPR learned that in New York City, people who refer to transgenders by a pronoun suggesting their biological birth, not their gender preference, may be subject to very significant fines – ranging from $125,000 to $250,000. |
Perhaps The New York Times did not need the threat of heavy fines to accept the new reality. LPR understands that “ze” and “hir” are also acceptable terms for transgenders.
