Lobbing for Liberals …

Tim Russert's leadoff guest on his February 25 TV talk program was Sen. Carl Levin who spoke about Democratic plans to strip President Bush of his commander-in-chief authority under Article 2 of the Constitution. (Levin did not state his party's aims quite so clearly.)

Mr. Russert, interviewing the senator, asked him about the nasty things critics are saying about Sen. Levin and, among other things, also asked the senator for his response to a quote from Sen. Mitch McConnell, GOP senate majority leader. Mr. Russert did not, however, put up a past Levin quote for the senator to explain.

Leaving the Liberals?

Senator Joe Lieberman, still caucusing with the Democrats, had an op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal, February 26 that, for LPR, anyway, accused Senate Democrats of opposing President Bush President Bush on Iraq for partisan reasons.

Ban Greenspan?

Media reports attributed the 415 points-plus drop in the February 27 Dow Jones stock market averages, in part, to some bleak predictions on the economy from
Alan Greenspan.

The Cramer-Zukerman theory -- that media explanations for the performance of the stock market tend not to describe reality --would get Mr. Greenspan off the hook. Still, LPR wonders why the former Federal Reserve chairman spoke out at all -- force of habit? -- and why the media applied his comments to the stock market performance, last Tuesday.

Former CIA personnel, LPR believes, must get clerarances before writing about their experiences. Just in case -- perhaps this rule should be adapted to former Fed chairmen -- concerning pronouncements on the economy after they have stepped down. It might be called "The No Good Can Possibly Come of This" rule.

A Mideast Suggestion …

The Palestinian government reshuffle apparently has not led to a softening of the Hamas position on Israel. Previously, the hardline Arab position included refusal to refer to the Jewish State as " Israel." The hardline term, LPR recalls, was "the
Zionist entity." LPR wonders: if Israel changed its name to "The Zionist Entity," would Hamas start talking?

PS: Aren't Hamas and Hezbollah still holding Israeli soldiers they kidnapped last year? Do we know for certain if the soldiers are alive?

FEBRUARY 22, 2007 --

Well, He Didn't "Yadda-Yadda" …

LPR noticed a recent column by Alec Baldwin at The Huffington Post that derided a congressman's statement in support of U.S. military action in Iraq as "a commitment to freedom blah-blah-blah."

LPR Looking Around …

Can we all agree this is still "Old Glory"? Our flag, proudly waving in Torrington, CT, February 8th.

Remember "The Gates" -- Central Park, NYC, February 11 to (unofficially) March 11, 2005

Hope You Had a Happy Valentine's Day -- In February, in Torrington, this is Valentine House.

Work of Nature -- Frozen stream, Torrington, February 8.

Work of Nature...Plus -- Real people, horses, trees, temperature… artificial
snow, at Central Park's February 10 Winter Festival, (Central Park West apartment buildings in distance).

Time for NASCAR 2007 -- Jimmie Johnson, 2006 NASCAR champion, and winner, of the 2006 Daytona 500, during a television interview at
Gallagher's Steak House, while on a quick visit to Manhattan, 11 days before the start of the 2007 NASCAR
season, February 18, with the Daytona 500.

For How Long? -- A Shell station in Torringon, February 8. This price,
lower than pump prices in New York City, is still too high, but reports say gas prices are going up again.

For the Record …

Federalist No. 74, attributed to Alexander Hamilton, states that "the direction of war most peculiarly demands those qualities which distinguish the exercise of power by a single hand … and is an essential
part … of the executive authority."

FEBRUARY 6, 2007 --

Also on the Mall …
