LPR
predicts …
New York's next governor.
|
New
York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer.
|
Good Point …
LPR applauds Senator Joseph I. Lieberman for reminding his colleagues that
once there was a time when politics stopped at the water's edge.
Another Boxer Rebellion …
LPR has not seen such reference to Sen. Boxer's opposition to the appointment
of Dr. Rice as secretary of state but allows that it must have been used by
some reporter, or editorial writer, or op-ed contributor -- somewhere.
LPR heard, via the Laura Ingraham program, Sen. Boxer say that the Abu Ghraib
photos were seared in her memory. Wonder how she is effected by the beheadings?
The Silent Majority …
LPR has not heard a Republican senator inquire if Democrats support continued
minority suppression of the majority in
Iraq -- nor heard GOP comment on the apparent lack of denunciation from the
left on the use of murderous violence by the Iraqi "insurgents."
Questions for the Left …
No words to denounce atrocious attack
On democracy's spirit rising in Iraq?
Referring to the ruthless by the term "insurgents"
Washing their crimes with verbal detergents?
Glass is Half-Empty Department…
The Dow Jones drop, last Friday, was attributed by some to the disappointing
fourth quarter -- growth of 3.1% - notwithstanding the 4.4% growth for all
of 2004.
Is this Wall Street's version of demanding more recounts in Ohio -- that the
Dow won't again break 11,000 until a Democrat is in the White House?
JANUARY 23,
2005 --
Mean Streets …
LPR spotted this
anti-car trap at 71st and Broadway on January 17. This photo was taken
two days later. It was still there by Saturday's snow which perhaps
filled it in for a while. Maybe if New York City had
fewer tows and more highway personnel?
LPR Wonders…
If another member of the Bush family becomes the nation's chief executive,
will the job title get changed to:
Bushident of the United States
Why this
photo?
|
February
2004 - John Kerry
|
Because LPR does
not have a photo of President Bush.
All-purpose
political sign…
This
sign, used for the Wisconsin primary, last
year, seems suitable, now, for Gov. Dean's
campaign to head the Democratic National Committee.
Howard
Dean …
It is not likely LPR could have gotten a photo of Gov. Dean had he won the
Democratic presidential nomination, last summer.
Christo/Jeanne-Claude
in the Snow…
This
might look like a golden ceiling or river the
last half of February. On January 23, it looked
like a snowfield with markers
indicating snow depth.
Closed Not Because of Snow…
LPR drove by the Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center, as snow began to
fall last Saturday afternnon, when a matinee performance would be taking
place.
As the photo of the Grand Staircase at the Met indicates, the opera house was
closed the Saturday afternoon of January 23. There were no performances from
January 10 to January 25 -- which hadn't happened before, a Met security person
told LPR.
Sunday
Skiing in Central Park…
JANUARY
16, 2005 --
Bloombergopolis?
Will Mayor Bloomberg, re-elected to four more years
Start work to realize LPR's very worst fears
Saying at the end of twenty-oh- nine
"I've impoverished the people; the city's all mine"
Demanding honor as the Great Bloomberg with fanfare and fuss
The people huddled and whispering, "O gloomberg is us."
LPR on the
Road …
Last Thursday, LPR was in Torrington, Connecticut and caught up again with
Jacques, the karaoke king (LPR's term,
not his) at the J & L Restaurant, Bar & Pizza.
See for yourself -- Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
|
Jacques,
the "Karaoke King."
|
LPR on Stocks …
The Dow Jones has
declined six of the first ten business days of 2005. And with the Dow
Jones down more than 200 points since December 31, the four gain days
have been more than offset by the down days.
Is it just beginning of the year profit taking from 2004? Are we at the start
of a second term Bush bear market? LPR has no clue, but would put in this request:
Alan Greenspan: stop tinkering with interest rates.
LPR Photo
Observations …
The
following photos were taken on the way to "Siberia" on
January 12.

A
NYC cart with the horse as seen by LPR outside the Plaza Hotel
on Saturday Morning, and below, one without the horse as seen
on the evening of January 12.

the Javits Center.
|
" 24"-- Briefly Noted …
LPR caught the first two airings of this show's new season on Fox, The series
stars Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, and the cast includes William Devane,
as
the kidnapped defense secretary. He was one of the bad guys in "Marathon
Man" (I remember him in "MacBird")
LPR prays that art is here not imitating life, given all the internal squabbling
and backstabbing at Jack Bauer's counter-terrorism unit. Or are we supposed
to
watch "24" and understand Iraq better?

"North
Korea campaigns against long hair, untidy attire"-- AFP
headline
If a country
lacks cars and seatbelts
For revenue by fines it goes somewhere else
In North Korea, will men from fines need a safe harbor
Provided twice a month they go to their barber?
Addendum…
This writer a seat belt $90 buck ticket did snag
January 10 in New York City
No matter the car comes equipped with air bag
NYC is, of course, the true "town without pity"
Randy
Johnson Arrives…
|
LPR
was on hand when Randy Johnson arrived at Yankee Stadium, January
11 for his formal welcome as a New York Yankee. LPR will have
more on this next week.

What Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson Actually Wrote…
In view of the recent tumult over torture at the hearing on the nomination
of White House Counsel Alberto Gonzalez to succeed John Ashcroft as Attorney
General, LPR googled "The Constitution is not a suicide pact."
Up came the name of Justice Jackson and the Terminiello case, overturning a
breach of peace conviction in Chicago against Father Terminiello, whose right
wing views
drew some 800 supporters at a rally -- and a thousand protesters, leading to
violence.
Justice Jackson dissented from this 1949 opinion (the Court split 5-4) and
ended his dissent with these words: "There is danger that, if the Court
does not temper its doctrinaire logic with a little practical wisdom, it will
convert the constitutional Bill of Rights into a suicide pact." A point
worth noting today, given "doctrinaire?" difficulty in distinguishing
terrorists
from military combatants -- and in taking careful note of the atrocities committed
by terrorists in Iraq.

LPR Meets John
Roberts, CBS News
On Friday, January 7, LPR followed fire engines up Manhattan's Tenth Avenue,
to a CBS building between 56th and 57th streets. LPR went around the corner on
57th Street and snapped a photo of John Roberts walking its way.
After learning from a fireman that it
was just a false alarm, Mr. Roberts stopped for a second photo for the LPR camera.
Note: LPR offers no opinion on any new posts at CBSNews for Mr. Roberts -- (not
wanting to be a jinx) but will keep this one on file, just in case.

Work For Ralph And Do Well …
The Nader booksale in Winsted featured a variety of volumes, including "Reagan's
Ruling Class." by Ronald Brownstein and Nina Easton, with a lengthy attack
on Reaganites in the introduction by Mr. Nader.
When they wrote the book, in 1982, they were Nader staff writers. Mr. Brownstein
is now national political columnist for the Los Angeles Times, based in Washington,
D.C. -- and available for talks at a fee of $5,000 to $10,000.
Ms. Easton is currently deputy chief of the
Washington, D.C. bureau of The Boston Globe.

Was Abu Ghraib
Truly Worse?
LPR wonders about the silence of the left to the ongoing bombings and killings
claimed by "insurgents" in Iraq.
Ignore the bloodletting
Including the beheading
On Abu Ghraib dwell
It's the blame America sell
End Of The Year Pothole …
LPR spotted this pothole December 27 on Broadway in The Bronx, just a block or
so from Yonkers. Among the ongoing problems in our society noted by Ralph
Nader in his Winsted talks, last month, were crumbling schools and ... crumbling
roads.
Think of them not as merchandise, but as mementos.

LPR
mugs, caps, T-shirts, coming soon. Also on the horizon - LPR photos
as photocopies suitable for framing, and blank cards with photos on
cover.
