Observations - January 2007

JANUARY 29, 2007 --

LPR IN Washington …

Rev. Jesse Jackson addressing the January 27 anti-war rally at the National Mall. More LPR images of the rally and march, and of the
National Review conservative summit -- next week.

JANUARY 29, 2007 --

The State of the State of the Union Address …

LPR was impressed by the President's delivery and, particularly on Iraq, by his accommodating, reasoned, resolute tone.

JANUARY 29, 2007 --

The Democratic Response from Senator Webb …

A challenge to President Bush to follow the Democrats' lead -- or else.

On PBS, liberal Mark Shields simply gushed at Webb's gratuitous snipes at Mr. Bush and he was just about seconded by the co-opted David Brooks, with moderator
Jim Lehrer smiling quite broadly.

JANUARY 29, 2007 --

Time to Change the Names?

If Senator Clinton wins the Democratic 2008 presidential nomination, LPR proposes that the Dems change their name to Team Clinton. And, of course, if Jeb Bush gets the Republican nomination. we should go from referring to Republicans as the GOP (Grand Old Party) to GOB (Grand Old Bushies).

JANUARY 29, 2007 --

LPR at the Pump …

The gasoline pump price indicated in this photo, taken last week, was still in effect the morning of January
23, suggesting that the price of crude oil drops somewhat faster than the price at some pumps.

JANUARY 29, 2007 --

LPR Has Not Seen …

… this December 11, 1941 FDR quote cited in New York Times editorials on Iraq:
" 'In time of war there can be no domestic partisan politics.'"

JANUARY 29, 2007 --

And How About This?

If Senator Clinton wins the White House, next election, let's have Chelsea, on victory night, announce she is forming an exploratory committee for 2016.

JANUARY 29, 2007 --

LPR wonders …

… if it would have made a difference to Democrats had President Bush declared that the aim in Iraq was not to stop terrorism, but … to stop ethnic cleansing.

JANUARY 29, 2007 --

LPR Doesn't Hear Anyone …

… condemning attacks on civilians in Iraq.

JANUARY 16, 2007 --

Sticker Shock Syndrome …

The sobering reality of sticker shock

Is not the instant fear of going into hock

But the follow-up reaction to the exorbitant price

That we gradually -- accept meekly as mice

JANUARY 16, 2007 --

Now THAT'S some SUV …

… photographed in Manhattan, last
week, at 86th Street and Broadway.

JANUARY 16, 2007 --

Rush Caller Has a Point …

Recently a woman called Rush Limbaugh on the air

Remarking about a media reaction that wasn't there

To the stock market rise after the Bush January 10 address

No credit to Prez for the rise; more carping on Iraq's mess

JANUARY 16, 2007 --

Hazardous to Our Health …

How about a surgeon-general's warning that the parking policy of New York City causes a great amount of stress and therefore might result in, among other
things, high blood pressure that is perhaps as harmful to health as certain fats.

JANUARY 16, 2007 --

LPR On Moving …

Beware of movers who remark, on arriving, that the move is unexpectedly difficult and they might have trouble doing it -- and end up charging about twice the fee originally agreed to, with the moving party concluding it has no choice, if the premises are to be vacated on time.

JANUARY 16, 2007 --

LPR On Taxi Travel …

Take down some identifying number or name as soon as you get going -- just in case you might leave something -- keys, for example -- in the cab. This could save you from being locked out of car and home.

JANUARY 16, 2007 --

Finally …

… some of radio's conservative microphone-huggers have dropped the ready response to callers, unhappy with Republican candidates, that they should stick with Republicans, no matter what.

LPR agrees with the view, expressed by Rush Limbaugh and others, that lots of Republicans stayed home, November 7, because they just could not vote for the Republican, no matter what -- and this is why there are Democratic majorities in both houses of the 110th Congress.

LPR would recommend an FYI approach to voting: Follow Your Inclination. Who knows? FYI votes might turn third parties into majority parties.

JANUARY 4, 2007 --

Gates-gate …

"Gates meets with Iraqis on military aid"

A news item that had me think of Microsoft's Bill

Imagine all the attention that might have been paid

If the Gates was not Robert facing Dems on the Hill

JANUARY 4, 2007 --

Common sense?

To me , the Iraq matter kinda seems plain

What we first do is win, and then we train

JANUARY 4, 2007 --

Memo to Yahoo …

Justice Brennan in New York Times v. Sullivan noted that we have a tradition of lively, even nasty political speech. He did not try to change that tradition. Why do you?

JANUARY 4, 2007 --

Do we need legislation …

… to stop people from crossing streets speaking on cell phones and ignoring traffic?

JANUARY 4, 2007 --

LPR Calls on Congress to Approve "The White House Is not a Family
Heirloom Amendment" to the Constitution …

To wit: The son, step-son, son-in-law, daughter, step-daughter, daughter-in-law, spouse, former spouse, aunts, uncles, first cousins of a president are eligible for the presidency or vice presidency no less than 24 four years from the November 1st of the year in which said president was
on the ballot in the general election for his last term as President of the United States.

JANUARY 4, 2007 --

The World War II Comparison …

Critics of President Bush have been pointing out that the war in Iraq has lasted longer than our involvement in World War II. LPR has not, however, heard anyone
compare the number of military deaths we have suffered this December to the number of casualties we had in Europe, alone, December 1944. Check it out.

PS: Our War for Independence lasted longer than our involvement in Iraq.

JANUARY 4, 2007 --

LPR Requests Clarification …

If we are at war in Iraq, who is the enemy? (Beyond the concept of "terrorism," that is.) Are we, ourselves, at war, or are we really helping one side in a civil war?

Who are the belligerents in our war in
Iraq -- or in the Iraq Civil War? If the major
antagonists in Iraq are the Shiites and Sunnis, is the Bush Administration influenced by the concerns of the Saudis toward their Sunni brethren in Iraq?

JANUARY 4, 2007 --

Rule Britannia?

The Brits created Iraq a bit more than 80 years ago. Any Bush critic ready to tell Tony Blair to deal with it? Oil got your tongue??

JANUARY 4, 2007 --

No More Appeals for Saddam?

Is that it? One appeal and Saddam Hussein is out?

Doesn't this mean he can't go on trial any more as had been previously reported? Or will his other trials be held in extreme absentia? Poor Saddam. Once Washington worked with him. Back in the days when he aggressed against Iran!

BTW--wonder how Manuel Noriega is doing in one of our federal prisons.

Should Saddam claim that failure to put him in a federal pen denies former tyrants equal treatment?

Then again, Milosevic did die in custody. Wonder if the cause there was … polonium.

JANUARY 4, 2007 --

LPR's Hunches …

… That NATO went after Milosevic mainly because Europeans still blame Serbia for igniting World War I.

… That considering the Arabs did not cut off oil to us after President Truman recognized the State of Israel in 1948, the 1973 oil "embargo" -sending prices way
up-had more to do with an end to the oil depletion allowance over here, that the Yom Kippur War over there.

JANUARY 4, 2007 --

LPR is not surprised …

… that House Democrats in the majority, now, are reported by The Washington Post, in its lead story, January 2, to have decided to forget about promises to
involve the Republican House minority in developing legislation.

It is unfortunate for these House Democrats that this indication of not keeping one's word was reported the day of the funeral of President Ford, acclaimed as a politician who was honest and KEPT his word.

Nor is LPR surprised …

… ...that gas prices are again zooming upward. LPR has not, however, seen the Ford funeral cited in explanation for reinvigorated greed at the oil companies.

Well, people, are we gonna take this renewed assault on us the way … Republicans take getting bashed by Democrats: In suffering silence?
