NCAA Update…

The selection committee sure got it right by inviting George Mason University as an 11th seed to this year's division 1 men's basketball tournament.

Except now it is clear they should have been seeded No. 1 -- along with UCLA, LSU and Florida -- the Final Four.

None of the selected Final Four teams will be playing next week: Duke, Memphis St., UConn and Villanova.

UConn had a close call against Washington before losing to George Mason. History here kind of repeated; when UConn had a close call against Washington in 1998, it lost in the round of eight, too. BUT -- won the NCAA title the next year.

Now to see if UCLA returns to its traditional position as NCAA powerhouse. One thing this year's tournament reaffirms: teams do not win games based on press clippings. They win by working the ball.

P.S. LPR has a hunch that the Connecticut overtime defeat might spark some interest in George Mason, as well as the basketball team carrying his name. For starters, Mason was a wealthy Virginian who was a delegate to the constitutional convention, but refused to sign the Constitution, reportedly because it lacked a national bill of rights.

He was also a slaveholder, with 75 thousand acres in Virginia and Kentucky, who was said to oppose slavery. See: Decision in Philadelphia: The Constitutional Convention of 1787, by Christopher Collier and James Lincoln Collier, chapter 2, Ballantine paperback.

By whose watch …

In Manhattan, the parking meter on Broadway, near 79th street might say that 25 cents gets half an hour of parking but put 25 cents in this meter and stay more than TEN minutes, and you are likely to get a ticket, LPR believes.

Manhattan parking meter.

An Idea for Broadway?

To save costs, perhaps shows might merge, as for example:

The Lord of the Ring of Fire.

A Terrible Pun (is there any other kind?) …

LPR is concerned that the controversy over global warming is leading to global scolding.

Belated FYI …

LPR Advisory to Independent Filmmakers (or the Big Guys) …

This part of Winsted's Main Street (photos taken March 21) seems a perfect setting for period film. Warning: spend some time in northwest Connecticut and you will want to live there.

LPR Thanks …

NCAA 2006 Men's Basketball Tournament …

LPR predicts that the Huskies will win their game in the "Sweet 16" round. The Huskies are the nicknames of UConn and the University of Washington, who face
each other March 24, in Washington, DC, at the MCI Center.

These Huskies teams were paired in the 1998 "Sweet 16" round. March 19, 1998--with the win going to UConn 75-74. UConn lost in the next round to North Carolina.

The 1998 NCAA Men's Division 1 champ was Kentucky, which UConn defeated, this March 19, to get into the "Sweet 16" round against a Washington team that, it is fair to assume, will be looking to reverse the outcome of the 1998 Huskies vs. Huskies NCAA game.

Creditable Selections …

The NCAA selection committee for the men's division 1 basketball tournament picked 10 of the "Sweet 16" teams -- for a 62.5 rating.

The Atlanta selections:

Duke (1)
Texas (2)
LSU (4)
Only Iowa (4) did not get into this regional, replaced by West Virginia (6)

The Oakland selections:

Memphis (1)
UCLA (2)
Gonzaga (3)
Kansas (4) lost in the first round to Bradley (13) which is in the "Sweet 16" round.

The Minneapolis selections

Villanova (1)
Florida (3)
Boston College (4)
Second seed in this regional -- Ohio State -- lost in the second round to Georgetown, the third team not expected to make the "Sweet 16" round.

The Washington, D.C. selections

UConn (1) was the only team among the top four seeds in this regional to reach the "Sweet 16" round.

In place of Tennessee (2), North Carolina (3) and Illinois (4), UConn is joined by Wichita St. (7), George Mason (11) and Washington (5).

(LPR got 8 of the 16; The Hartford Courant 7 of the 16) In The Washington Post, March 13, the headline above John Feinstein's analysis for the Oakland
regional stated: "Watch Out for UCLA [right on] and Kansas [ouch].")

In view of the relative success of the NCAA selection committee, LPR has no objection if they get hired by CNBC, among other business media outlets, to analyze the economy
.

MARCH 12, 2006 --

The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament …

LPR does not think that all the NCAA's no. 1 seeds -- Duke, Memphis, Villanova and UConn -- will reach the final four. Syracuse seemed like a team of destiny in the Big East tournament. And beyond? And isn't it time that the one-time underdog Gonzaga got to the NCAA's semi-finals?

Shana on Sesame Street? …

Only after seeing the print of this photo of Shana, at a rest stop on Route 684, heading to Route 84 and Torrington, CT, did it occur that it might be something
"Sesame Street" could use.

Is it a Sunshine Day …

There were some protests before construction began on this residential building, on the Henry Hudson Parkway
service road, at 237th St.. But the stop sign, with setting sun in back, is intended as a traffic direction, not a protest.

Traffic direction, not protest.
