Same Sandwich; New Context

JANUARY 16, 2007 --

Researching via Google indicates that, in 1985, Chief Judge Sol Wachtler of the New York Court of Appeals, originated the comment that district attorneys could get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich.

LPR offers this variation: Any reporter on The New York Times could make a ham sandwich the basis of a scandal allegation against a Republican member of Congress. [Pause.] Indeed, LPR wonders if such ability is a key factor in the hiring of Times reporters.

(LPR also wonders if Chief Judge Wachtler said ham -- or pastrami -- when he first made the remark in an interview with Marcia Kramer.)

And speaking of the Times: is it going to do a Randy Johnson with The Boston Globe, which it presently owns?

(The New York Yankees acquired Pitcher Johnson from the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2005, and are now de-acquiring him back to the Diamondbacks.)
