Miles from the Mainstream
D. R. ZUKERMAN, proprietor
Midsummer Letter From Shana

JULY 17, 2006 --

Hi Everybody (sorry that does not include spiders and robots),

I convinced David, my companion of nearly 17 years and proprietor of this website, to let me write copy for this LPR posting when he told me he planned to link an oil analyst's recent concern about crude at $100 a barrel with President Logan's suggestion, on "24" last
season, that his nerve gas/terrorists scheme was intended to keep oil
from hitting $100 a barrel.

Enough talk about oil prices -- at least for now. Besides, they won't go down
until Americans tell the oil companies to drink their product -- and/or the President realizes that high oil prices are an attack on the U.S. by economic means.

I had fun, last Saturday night, watching people walk into the Tribeca Grand Hotel after-opening party for the movie "Edmond," with William H. Macy in the title role. Although the hotel welcomes us canines, I didn't want to divert attention from the celebs and was happy to stay outside.

(That's Kim Shulster, Renata Lorenc's PR partner upstaged by me in the accompanying photo.)

David told me he enjoyed getting photos of Mr. Macy, Renata, Kim, Veltis and Emily -- and also did not mind getting photos of Bai Ling. The movie is based on a one-act play by David Mamet.  He wrote the screenplay.  Director is Stuart Gordon.

Of particular interest to me is the fact that Mr. Macy -- wasn't he super in "Fargo" and "Seabiscuit" among other films? --was once a veterinarian.   There but for
acting could have been my doctor.

July 13, David and I drove to Manhattan's East Side, to see where an explosion demolished a town house.

Two  days after the explosion

Two days after the tragedy, the site was just about cleared away.  David did get a photo of what appears to be an entrance --now an entrance into nothingness.

Dr. Nicholas Bartha, a cardiologist, owner of the building, was inside at the time of the explosion.

Suspected of causing the explosion to keep his ex-wife from getting the property, Dr. Bartha died of his injuries a week later.

And I asked David to send the photo of two Broadway Show League fans to LPR webmaster Terri Fassio for posting.  They were watching the game between Rent and Blue Man Group -- as was I.  Blue Man won, 10-9, scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh (the last inning).

League playoffs start July 27.  David got an email from Toni, on the Rent team, wishing me well and saying she considers me the league's mascot.  How about that?
Well, I consider the league my mascot.

(David, do I have time to thank some people, like they do at the Tonys, Oscars and Emmys?)

I'd like to thank all the Broadway Show League people,  but would like to mention, in particular, Kim Travis, manager of Actors Equity, Mike Raphael, shortstop on Playwrights Horizons, the Hensley (Hensley, not Helmsley) family, Toni on Rent, Carlos Martinez, Commish....

Uh-oh, David tells me  it is time to go out.

I also want to thank Central Park Conservancy president Douglas
Blonsky, my friends in Torrington …

Okay, I'm summing up.

Wishing the Broadway Show League a great playoff series (open to the public, by the way).

And don't forget the Connecticut State Agricultural Fair in Goshen, CT,
July 28 - 30. For directions, check with Yahoo.

Happy rest of summer everybody (sorry--that still does not include spiders and robots).

Love,
Shana
