The LPR De Facto Seeds for the NCAA's Sweet 16 Round

MARCH 23, 2008 --

The Seedmeisters of the 2008 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament got it right on 11 of 16 of the "Sweet 16" seedings. East Regional seedings scored a 100 with No. 1 North Carolina, No. 2 Tennessee, No. 3 Louisville and No. 4 Washington State reaching the third round.

The NCAA seedmeisters scored 3 out of 4 in the South with top-seeded, Memphis, followed by No. 2 Texas and No. 3 Stanford getting into the third round.

Only the first and third seeds made it to the Sweet 16 in the midwest and west regionals -- Kansas and Wisconsin in the midwest, and UCLA and Xavier in the west.

In the South regional, Michigan State gets to play as de facto No. 4 against top-seeded Memphis. In the Midwest, Villanova is de facto No. 2 against No. 3 Wisconsin with Davidson de facto No. 4 against top seeded Kansas. In the West, Western Kentucky is the de facto No, 4 against top seeded UCLA, with West Virginia the de facto No. 2 seed against No. 3 seed Xavier in the west.

LPR makes no prediction that this analysis of the first two rounds of the NCAA's Division 1's mens basketball tournament will introduce the term "de facto seeding" to the third and later rounds of this great annual college classic.
