Two Predictions of the Afghanistan Catastrophe

September 10, 2021 --

Two articles, one in The New York Times, May 5, 2021;  the second in The Wall Street Journal July 27, 2021 argued, essentially, that the Afghanistan future is dire, if we  abandon the country to the Taliban.  The first article, "Before We Can Leave Afghanistan," is by Rep. Michael McCaul (R.-Tex.) and former Ambassador to Afghanistan (under President Obama) Ryan Crocker.  The second article, "How to Avert Disaster in Afghanistan," is by  Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster and Bradley Bowman.

A squib inserted in the McMaster / Bowman op-ed states: "The least the U.S. can do is offer air support, intel and ensure proper logistics and maintenance contracting."

This article concluded that without giving the Afghan this minimal amount of assistance, "what's likely to come is a collapse in Afghanistan that will embolden the enemies of all civilized peoples and compel a much more costly intervention later."

Thus far, sadly, the first part of the prediction has been realized. (Does the deep state plan an intervention prior to the November 2022 elections to get the country to rally round Biden?).
