MARCH
20, 2005 --
LPR traveled to Worcester, Massachusetts, March 18 for the
start of the NCAA basketball tournament.
One of the venues for the Men's Division I tournament was the DCU Center in
Worcester, about an hour from the UConn campus in Storrs, Connecticut.
LPR did not have NCAA credentials and had to settle for these photos -- viewing
outside the event.
LPR did learn that DCU stands for Digital
Federal Credit Union.
Two days earlier, LPR stopped at UConn, getting some photos of UConn coach Jim
Calhoun, including the one shown here. LPR returned to UConn, March 18, for
more photos of the UConn men's and women's home court, Gampel Pavilion, where
the men's and women's NCAA
championship banners -- including the double 2004 championships -- proudly hang,
facing each other across mid-court.
At this writing, the UConn men's team had
lost to North Carolina State, 65-62 in the second round at the DCU Center (which
next week hosts opening rounds in the NCAA hockey tournament.
And at this writing, the NC State win leaves open the possibility of a matchup
between North
Carolina and NC State in
the Syracuse regionals.
Before leaving Gampel March 18, LPR noticed the setting up of the media interview
room for the opening rounds of the NCAA Women's Division I basketball
tournament. (Usually, this "room" is an open area inside one of the
Gampel entrances.)
UConn Coach Geno Auriemma's team opened the defense of its 2004 crown
at Gampel March 20.
For LPR, the noon to midnight opening men's rounds, a total of 32 games over
two
days, are a basketball feast. This year, the opening rounds brought the
remarkable wins in the Syracuse region, of 14th seeded Bucknell over 3rd seeded
Kansas, and 13th seeded Vermont over 4th seeded Syracuse.
LPR is still going with Illinois to win the championship --if it reaches the
Final Four in St, Louis, April 2. Championship game is April 4.
