Winsted's "Flood of 1955 Day"

AUGUST 28, 2005 --

The week marking the 50th anniversary of the terrible flood of Winsted, Connecticut concluded, August 21 with an ecumenical service and rededication of the memorial honoring the seven flood victims.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell sent a proclamation honoring the victims and declaring August 21, 2005 "Flood of 1955 Day." Additions to the memorial were proposed by Joe
Lemelin of the Winchester Highway Department, and work was completed in late spring.

Principal speaker was Lt. Gov. Kevin Sullivan who told the small crowd, including members of the family of victim John Gould, that he was in Winsted on that day, spending two weeks
at the home of his Uncle Bud, on Smith Hill. (This writer, at the same time, was at Camp Wabigoon, farther up the same hill.)

Lt. Gov. Kevin Sullivan, principal speaker.

Mr. Sullivan, six years old at the time, recalled someone knocking on the front
door, during the night, and then saying, "The town is gone."

Mr. Sullivan noted that fifty years is a long time, but "it seems only yesterday as we gather here." Referring to the response to the flood, he said that there were "so many ordinary people who became
extremely heroic."

The assembled then walked to the rededicated memorial which now has a stone wall and flowers surrounding the
original memorial which was placed at the site, in East End Park, in 1956.
