President-Elect Volodymyr Zelensky

May 5, 2019 --

Ukraine's Central Election Commission, April 30, officially designated Volodymr Zelensky the winner of the presidential run-off, April 21, defeating incumbent President Petro Poroshenko with 73.22 percent of the vote, compared to Poroshenko's 24.55 percent. A remarkable achievement for this television personality who portrays a fictional Ukraine president in the series "Servant of the People." (The name of Zelensky's party is also "Servant of the People.") Taking note of his official designation as president-elect, Zelensksky quoted George Washington: "'Labor to keep alive in your breast that little spark of celestial fire, called conscience'", an d told Ukrainians, in part, "'I promise not to let you down.'" Zelensky will be Ukraine's first Jewish president.

Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman is also Jewish and, as several sources have noted, Ukraine joins Israel in having both a Jewish president and prime minister. It has also been reported that Zelensky has opposed moves to ban Russians from entertaining in Ukraine. While "Servant of the People" is in Ukrainian, Zelensky's films have been in Russian. LPR senses that the president-elect will ease tensions with Russia and serve in Federalist No. 57 fashion, holding sympathy of sentiments and communion of interests with the people of Ukraine -- east as well as west.
